On 28 June 1998 the French Grand Prix took place at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. The race went over a distance of 71 laps / 301.750 km.

Michael Schumacher, starting from position 2 in his Ferrari F300, was able to overtake his rival Mika Häkkinen in the McLaren-Mercedes at the start and take the lead. He would not relinquish this lead until the end of the race and, together with his team-mate Eddie Irvine, celebrated the first Ferrari double victory in over 8 years. It was the third victory of the season for Michael Schumacher, who thus reduced his gap to the overall leader Häkkinen.
